10 Tips for the future Volunteers!

Here I am, almost at the end of this experience, unfortunately..

I’ll not annoy you anymore, telling about how wonderful was this period of my life.. I guess you already understood from my previous post and photos on social media; what I would like to do now is to create a small handbook with some tips for the future EVSers. Obviously, it will be based on my personal experience or on the story of some other volunteers that I’ve met, so maybe it will be not useful for everybody..but I hope you will be interested anyway!

So, here it is, the list with my ten tips for you..

1)      INTEGRATE YOURSELF BUT DO NOT FORGET YOUR ROOTS

Do your best to become familiar with the culture, the city and the people; try to understand and accept their traditions, also if very different from yours, it will be a way to feel completely part of a new life. It can be difficult in the beginning, you will feel out of place, but I’m sure that day by day it will be better and you will enjoy your experience.

At the same time, do not forget your country and your loved ones; maybe in the beginning you will be so busy and focused on the new life to have few times for contacting friends and family..but try to be always in contact with them, through internet and social network nowadays it’s so easy. Share your feeling, help your friends..sometimes just a message can make them happy. It can happen that you will feel guilty for missing a baptism, a graduation ceremony or a sad moment of your best friend..try to participate also from far away..you can do it!

Moreover, it’s important to introduce your culture to your new friends, cook something for them, speak about your city and traditions..make them curious and willing to visit you once you’ll come back.

2)      LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE

For sure you will communicate mostly in English, but it will be important to learn the local language, the fundamental words to speak with who doesn’t know English, to do some shopping and to order a meal..to survive by yourself! I advise you to learn firstly how to introduce yourself and the numbers..to avoid embarrassing moments while you will have to pay in the market and ten people will be waiting behind you (yes, it will happen for sure!)

3)      BE CAREFUL TO THE CURRENCY

Mostly if you will be in a country with a different currency from yours, watch out to the money that you will spend! In the beginning everything will seem so cheap (or the contrary, so expensive!) and maybe you will be ready to buy new clothes and eat everyday out..but remember that the pocket money is not so high and it can happen that the first month you will finish the money before the next salary. In any case day by day you will learn to manage your money and understand what you can afford..in the last months I’ve started to evaluated 10 TL like 10 €! (but yes, anyway I bought many new clothes..but how I could resist?!)

4)      TRAVEL AND EXPLORE

Take your time to travel and discover new places around you. Try to find a cheap way to travel (for example by hitchhiking and camping on the beach), take into consideration every risk and danger, find someone to travel with, it will be safer.

In any way, visit new places, taste every speciality, also the ones that you think will be disgusting!

And when you will not have enough money or time to go far, take a bottle of water (mostly if you will be in Izmir in summertime!), your camera and start to walk around your city, get lost and discover new roads and corners ..you will be surprised!

5)      COMMUNICATE EVERY PROBLEMS AND DOUBTS

During a European Voluntary Service, you will be helped and supported from a Sending and a Hosting association. When is possible, keep a good communication with both of them; you will have a mentor, who will help you so much..don’t hesitate to ask him/her any kind of information, also to the coordinators of the project. Don’t feel stupid or embarrassed, you can ask for help and speak with the people around you; they will be there, available to help you in every moment. 

I’ve been very lucky for the people that I’ve met, but unfortunately sometimes there can be some problem during the service..remember that there will be a network of people behind you, ready to help you in solving any problem, don’t be shy and don’t be discouraged ..together everything can be solved!

6)      FIND YOUR “PLACE”

Find the group of friends and people with whom spend your free time; it will be important for not feeling lonely and feel less homesickness. In the first period, also when you will be tired after a day of work and you will just want to sleep, go out and meet new people. Try to meet local people and not just foreign. Find you place, your environment, your group of friends in the new city.

7)      BE CREATIVE AND GIVE YOURSELF A CHALLENGE

Every kind of service you are doing, try to be creative and proposer; show to the people you are working with that you want to do your best, give new ideas for projects and activities, I’m sure the association will be happy and will support you in any way possible.

Give yourself a challenge, create new adventures and activities, show what you are able to do and learn from people around you..everything will be so useful for your future.

At the same time remember that you are doing a Voluntary Service and you are not there for a working experience..so, if you will be working 7 days per week or you will feel that your rights are not respected..raise your voice!

8)      KEEP YOURSELF INFORMED

This is what I mean: before leaving for the EVS, your sending association will provide you the “Volunteer Kit” (if they don’t, ask for it) and a pre-departure training. Read carefully all the documents and the agreement that you will sign and for every question or doubt, don’t hesitate to ask, everything will be useful during your service.

Moreover, I advise you to read about the country that will host you, about the culture, the traditions, the political situation, ecc.. mostly in case you are going to a country with a difficult situation or with a culture completely different from yours.

9)      DEMOLISH YOUR PREJUDICES

Don’t leave ready to criticize other countries and cultures; don’t spend your time comparing your country with other and saying “in my country we do it, cook it, organized it better..” it will be not useful for anybody and will keep you far from the people you will meet. (and yes, unfortunately you will meet people that will do it)

Be ready to meet people and cultures that you will not understand and you will not like..but be also ready to accept them.

10)   CREATE AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE!

Take all the moments, of smiles, laugh, tears, joy and difficulties and keep into your heart.

Create your second family, ready to help you and host you every time you will need, find that people that make you feel better, give the best of yourself in your job, be open-minded and positive.

Create from this, an unforgettable experience!

These, are my small advises, I hope you are still awake!

Now, it’s time to enjoy these last days, to hug and say goodbye to all the wonderful people I’ve met and that will stay in my heart for ever!

It’s time to go back to my family and friends, that I’ve missed so much.

It’s time to get ready for another unbelievable adventure, in another wonderful country ..but about it, I’ll speak next time!

Ed eccomi qui, quasi alla fine della mia esperienza, purtroppo..

Non vi annoierò ancora dicendovi quanto è stato fantastico ed incredibile questo periodo della mia vita..penso che l’abbiate già capito dai miei racconti precedenti e dalle foto sui vari social network; quello che vorrei fare ora, nel mio ultimo articolo, è scrivere una piccola guida con qualche consiglio per i futuri volontari SVE. Ovviamente il tutto è basato sulla mia personale esperienza o su racconti di altri volontari incontrati in questi mesi, quindi probabilmente non sarà utile a tutti… ma spero vi interesserà J

E allora eccoli qua, i miei 10 consigli per voi:

1)      INTEGRATEVI MA NON DIMENTICATE LE VOSTRE RADICI

Cercate di ambientarvi il più possibile con la cultura, la città e le persone del posto; comprendete e accettate le loro tradizioni seppur diverse dalle vostre, sarà un modo per sentirvi completamente parte di una nuova vita. Potrà essere difficile all’inizio, vi sentirete fuori luogo, ma vi assicuro che dopo starete meglio e vi godrete a pieno l’intera esperienza.

Allo stesso tempo, non dimenticatevi del vostro paese e dei vostri affetti; magari all’inizio sarete talmente immersi nella nuova vita da non aver tempo per scrivere e sentire gli amici e la famiglia..ma cercate sempre di tenervi in contatto con tutti, tramite internet e i social network oggi è tutto più facile. Condividete le vostre emozioni con tutti, aiutate i vostri amici lontani, anche solo un messaggio li renderà felici. A volte potrete sentirvi in colpa perché vi starete perdendo un battesimo, una laurea o una crisi dei vostri più cari amici..cercate di viverli anche da lontano..potete farcela, volere è potere!

E soprattutto presentate la vostra cultura ai vostri nuovi amici, cucinate qualcosa per loro, parlate della vostra città e delle vostre tradizioni..rendeteli curiosi e desiderosi di visitarvi una volta che tornerete indietro.

2)      IMPARATE UNA NUOVA LINGUA

Ovviamente comunicherete principalmente con l’inglese, ma sarà importante imparare la lingua del posto; soprattutto le basi, per comunicare con chi non parla inglese, per fare la spesa e ordinare un pasto..insomma per poter sopravvivere da soli! Vi consiglio di imparare inizialmente le frasi di cortesia e i numeri.. quando dovrete pagare sarà tutto più semplice e non vi farete figure imbarazzanti al supermercato quando dietro di voi dieci persone saranno in fila ad aspettare (si, vi assicuro che all’inizio vi capiterà!)

3)      FATE ATTENZIONE AL CAMBIO DI VALUTA

In particolare se sarete in un paese che non usa la vostra stessa moneta, fate attenzione ai soldi che spendete! All’inizio tutto potrà sembrarvi così poco costoso (o al contrario, molto caro!) e magari vi darete alla pazza gioia comprando nuovi vestiti e mangiando fuori spesso..ma ricordatevi che il pocket money non è così alto e potrà succedere che il primo mese vi troverete ad aver finito i soldi prima dello stipendio successivo. Piano piano imparerete a gestirvi e a capire ciò che potete permettervi. Negli ultimi mesi sono arrivata a valutare 10 Lire Turche come fossero 10 Euro.. e si, nonostante tutto mi sono comparata molti vestiti nuovi (come facevo a resistere?!)

4)      VIAGGIATE ED ESPLORATE

Prendetevi il tempo per viaggiare e scoprire città e posti attorno a voi. Trovate un modo economico per viaggiare (ad esempio spostarsi in autostop e piantare una tenda in spiaggia), valutate rischi e pericoli del posto in cui siete, cercate di muovervi con qualcuno, sarà più sicuro. Insomma, in qualunque modo, visitate posti nuovi, provate ogni specialità, anche quelle che pensate possano disgustarvi.

E quando non avrete abbastanza tempo per allontanarvi troppo, allora prendete una bottiglietta d’acqua (soprattutto se sarete in Izmir in piena estate) e una macchina fotografica e cominciate a camminare in giro per la vostra città, perdetevi e scoprite nuove strade e angoli nascosti..saranno quelli che vi sorprenderanno di più e vi lasceranno a bocca aperta.

5)      COMUNICATE OGNI PROBLEMA E DUBBIO

Durante un Servizio di Volontariato Europeo, sarete aiutati e sostenuti da un’associazione del vostro stesso paese e da una che vi ospiterà. Cercate di mantenere una buona comunicazione con entrambe; avrete diritto ad avere un mentore, che vi sarà di grande aiuto..non esitate a chiedergli qualsiasi informazione, così come ai coordinatori del progetto. Non pensate di essere stupidi e non sentitevi imbarazzati, chiedete aiuto e confidatevi con le persone più vicine a voi; saranno tutti lì, disponibili ad aiutarvi immediatamente. Io posso dire di essere stata molto fortunata per le persone che ho incontrato, ma purtroppo qualche volta può capitare che ci siano problemi durante il servizio..sappiate che avrete dietro un’intera rete di persone che saranno lì per aiutarvi a risolvere i vostri problemi, non siate timidi e non scoraggiatevi..insieme si risolve tutto.

6)      TROVATE IL VOSTRO “POSTO”

Trovate il vostro gruppo di amici e di persone con cui passare il vostro tempo libero; sarà importante per non sentirvi soli e per provare meno nostalgia di casa. Inizialmente, anche quando sarete stanchi e avrete solo voglia di buttarvi sul letto e dormire dopo una giornata di lavoro, uscite, accettate gli inviti delle persone appena conosciute, prendete al volo ogni opportunità per uscire e conoscere quelle che potranno diventare alcune delle persone più importanti della vostra vita. Provate soprattutto ad uscire e relazionarvi con gente del posto e non solo con stranieri. Trovate il vostro “posto”, il vostro ambiente, il vostro gruppo nella nuova città!

7)      SIATE CREATIVI E METTETEVI IN GIOCO

Qualunque sia il tipo di servizio stiate facendo, cercate di essere creativi e propositivi; mostrate alle persone con cui lavorate che ci tenete a dare il massimo di voi stessi, date nuove idee e proponete nuove attività, sicuramente l’associazione ne sarà felice e proverà a sostenervi nella messa in atto di queste.

Mettetevi in gioco, buttatevi in nuove avventure e attività, dimostrate ciò che sapete fare e imparate da quelli accanto a voi..vi sarà tutto utile per il futuro.

Allo stesso tempo ricordatevi che state facendo un Servizio di Volontariato e che non siete partiti per lavorare; quindi, nel momento in cui vi troverete a lavorare 7 giorni su 7 o avrete l’impressione che i vostri diritti non siano rispettati, fatevi sentire!

8)      INFORMATEVI

Ecco cosa intendo: prima di partire per lo SVE, la vostra associazione vi fornirà il “Kit del volontario” (se non lo fa richiedetelo) e vi aiuterà con una formazione pre-partenza. Leggete tutti i documenti e il contratto che firmerete molto attentamente, e per qualsiasi domanda e dubbio non esitate a chiedere, è un vostro diritto e vi sarà molto utile per i mesi di servizio.

Inoltre, vi consiglio di informarvi riguardo il paese in cui andrete a stare: la cultura, le tradizioni, la situazione politica ecc.. soprattutto nel caso in cui stiate andando in paesi con una situazione poco stabile o comunque con una cultura molto diversa dalla vostra.

9)      ABBATTETE I VOSTRI PREGIUDIZI

Non partite pronti a criticare gli altri paesi e le altre culture; non passate il tempo a fare paragoni con il vostro paese e a dire “nel mio paese questo è fatto, organizzato, cucinato meglio..”, non sarà utile a nessuno e vi allontanerà dalle persone che conoscerete (e si, purtroppo incontrerete  molti che lo faranno).

Siate pronti a conoscere persone e tradizioni che non capirete e non vi piaceranno..ma siate anche pronti ad accettarli e a cercare di comprenderli.  

10)   FATE DI QUESTA, UN’ESPERIENZA INDIMENTICABILE!

Prendete tutti i momenti, di sorrisi, risate, pianti, difficoltà e gioie, e portateli tutti nel vostro cuore. Createvi una seconda famiglia pronta ad aiutarvi e accogliervi in ogni momento, cercate quelle persone che vi fanno stare bene, date il massimo nel vostro lavoro, siate disponibili, aperti e positivi.

Fate di questa un’esperienza indimenticabile!

Ecco, questi sono i piccoli consigli che ho da darvi, spero di non avervi annoiatoJ

Ora è tempo di godersi questi ultimi giorni, di abbracciare e salutare tutte le magnifiche persone che hanno incrociato il mio cammino e che resteranno per sempre nel mio cuore..

È tempo di tornare dalla mia famiglia e dai miei amici di sempre, che stringerò tra le braccia a più non posso..

È tempo di prepararsi ad affrontare un’altra grande avventura, in un altro incredibile paese..ma di questo, vi parlerò più avanti!
